David - Sounds like a problem in the manifold switch - i.e. it is shorting to ground. The manifold switch contacts should be closed with the decompression lever in the gas (start) position, and open in the diesel (run) position. And both manifold switch contacts should be isolated from ground in either starting level position. Incidentally the purpose of the manifold switch is to shut off current to the coil when running in diesel mode to reduce wear on the points, plugs etc. when they are not needed. Nice diagrams BTW!
