You have a restriction in your fuel line somewhere. Either the screen above the sediment bowl under the tank is clogged, something is in the line between the bowl and the carb, or, as FM said, something floating around in the tank is blocking the outlet.

What happens is, after it sits for a while, enough fuel trickles through to fill the float bowl on the carb, and it will run for a few seconds on that much fuel, but when it sucks the float bowl dry, there's not enough coming from the tank to keep it running.
