oil pump retaining ring

Don't laugh...I'm restoring a '47 Farmall B...total disassembly and rebuild for learning...this is my first project. How do I disassemble the oil pump...I removed the retaining ring to release the body gear but it doesn't move...is there a key that needs to be removed. Also, what's the correct way to remove the retaining ring...it took me most of the day...is there the "right tool for the right job"?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
