My 300 came new from factory with no crank, shaft through bolster or coupler on front end of crankshaft. The hole through bolster was there. Interestingly enough my 560D came with hole through bolster for cranking, but no crank, probably provission for gas model. If 560D didn't have enough battery for turning starter, I think it would take a wicked set of arms to crank it, given the glow plugs wouldn't work much better than starter. At some point during 50s a crank must have become an option.
