12v should have a 6-12V for coil 12v coming off starter solenoid to coil so at starting you have 12V then 12V off switch to resistor at coil for 6-8v to run off of sounds like wired wrong wire from starter should be on solenoid starter buttom terminal so you only get 12v when starter is cranking.
