they are black and have three cells were very popular until early 50s were used widely in all cars and tractors replaced if equiped with a srarter hand turning cranks still are widely used by the purists in old tractors and cars they have lots of power for starting engines year around although some like to modernize and chsange to higher voltage although they have terrible problems tearing up starters and countless wiring difficulties as they are constantly are asking pics and diagrams for the wiring details guess i will stay back in the woods as dont seem to have any reason to change to a higher voltage call if you need help will be glad to keep you informed
