Inside the bulb is a liquid that builds up pressure in response to temperature. What you read as temperature is the pressure of the fluid inside the bulb/tube assembly. In instrumentation, the assembly is called a capillary tube. They are filled at the factory and if the fill leaks out,it will no longer operate and unfortunately can't be repaired. There are temperature gauges that operate on a bimetallic spiral. These have an extention that usually projects straight out of the back of the gauge and the spiral element is directly connected to the gauge pointer. There also is a themocouple gauge that has a thermocouple connected to a millivolt meter that is calibrated to read temperature. The assembly on your tractor is a capillary.Hope you folks didn't mind my rambling.I work on instrumentation and enjoy discussing it.
