I heard a story similar to this, actually closer to what Mike is saying. This was forestry equipment with a Detroit Diesel left in neutral, as result didn't go any where. It was running when owner got to bush in morning. They shut it down only to find it wouldn't start again. Starter had stayed engaged and it tore the starter drive to bits. They also found dead short in wiring that caused starter to go. My suspicion, on your friends H is if starter and starter drive are intact, you have foul play. I don't think a cold H engine will start from impulse on mag. A short at starter will usually not end in precise timeing with tractors start.
