These were add-on gear reductions to original Delco-Remy (GM) starters, add-on were made by at least 2 different mfg, A & W and M & W, you had to cut the armature shaft to install this so there was no going back to factory with out buying another armature. This was a invention for the high compression Fire-Crater pistons, tractors would start but turned over slowly. Same design that give Chrysler starters the distinct noise, pretty much every starter this way now.
