The check valves in those pumps are extremely simple. Just a small hexagon of phenolic and a spring. Take the domes off the top of the pump and make sure there is no debris there (careful not to lose anything as the pieces are loose). You might also increase the length of the spring slightly to give it a little more tension, if you think they are leaking.

Last, something I found the hard way, make sure your gas cap has a small hole in the top so the pump doesn't try to pull a vacuum. Mine got painted over.
