Yes, it starts on gas and then switches over to diesel. It's reccomended to switch back and let the engine cool off before you shut down. The Torque amplifier is an early type of power shift. With the lever forward (direct drive) it is like any other transmission, with the lever back (TA), it slows ground speed and increases torque. It will freewheel in TA, don't use it as a brake or it will break. Repairs on gas-start diesels and Torque Amplifiers are very expensive. If you aren't familiar with them, I'd suggest that you hire a good mechanic, who is familiar with both of these things, to go along with you and evaluate that 400D before you buy it. It could be a lot cheaper in the long run. Just my 2 cents though.
