I suppose it could work. Two items would concern me, though. First of all, a typical diode has a .6 volt drop when forward biased. That .6 volts will really haunt you - it really makes a difference in how much charge you can put to the battery. The second concern I have is the size needed. My guess is that you would need at least a 35 amp diode - probably 50 amps rating to be safe. Do you know how big and expensive something like that is? I would stick with a relay if I were you. Actually, since you are talking about changing to something that is not stock anyway, why not just convert to 12 volts and an alternator? You don't need either a relay or a regulator when you do that. And the cost would be far less than finding a high power diode.
