The basic differences between the M and SM are: disk brakes on the SM (though a few M tractors came with the Lambert disk setup) faster 3rd and 4th gears on the SM, SM engine built at 264cid, M at 248, but most M overhauls moved them to 264cid, and most SM rebuilds were at 281cid. There are a few other subtle differences, such as the thickness of the drawbar, but that's the overall picture.

Tough tractors, easy to work on, and lots of fun to work with. Since the one you're looking at has a loader, be aware that you may need new bearings one of these days in the front wheels and the steering gear.
