The two check petcocks on the side of the oil pan are hold-overs from the days when those old girls ran on "tractor fuel". The original owner's manual for the '44 H that my Dad bought new says that you are to drain oil from the bottom petcock each day to get rid of the lighter oil that gets into the crankcase from unburned fuel. Then re-fill until oil comes out of the top one. BTW, the petcocks have LEFT HAND threads that open and close them. Pliers work good for this job-I wish I had a dime for every time I've opened & closed the top one on Dad's old H. We farmed 800A with it and two other H's when I was in High School in the late '50's.
