1951 Farmall H - electrical problem

Original 6V positive ground system. Starter will not engage. Took starter on bench direct - works fine. Had this rebuilt last year.
I noticed that my battery would not hold a charge lately so I bought a replacement and lo and behold it also drained down. I noticed when hooking up the newly charged battery that the connection sparked. Something component or connection is allowing a short. Would anyone have an idea of what I could check? Thanks
