Hey Slappy - That amount of play in the lower bushing is NG - there should be NO radial play in either bolster shaft bushing. So either the lower bushing shell or the bolster journal surface is severely worn. If it's the shell, simply replacing the shell will eliminate the play. Otherwise you will need to replace the entire pivot shaft. Getting that old bushing shell out in one piece is tough. When I rebuilt the front end on my Super H I wound up using a chisel to cut the shell lengthwise, then collapsing it to get it out. Before installing the new bushing, I first thoroughly cleaned the inside of the bushing bore in the casting. I then checked the bore for burrs, then give it a light coat of grease. To install the bushing I turned scrap of oak in a lathe to make a stepped bushing "pusher". The bushing was then driven into place by tapping lightly with a hammer. As for the bushing lube hole alignment, simply line the hole up carefully with the lube port in the casting before driving the bushing into place. But if the hole doesn't line up when you are finished, you can remove the grease fitting and drill a new lube hole in the bushing using a long bit thru the grease port. A couple more tips: 1 - On my SH I found the upper pivot shaft bushing surface was worn a few thousandths undersize causing a bit radial play at the upper end. So I inserted some thin (.003"?) shim stock between the bushing shell and it's bore before driving the new bushing in close up the space. I also positioned the shim to move the sector gear closer to the worm to help reduce the worm/sector backlash. 2 - A couple weeks after I finished with my SH I found the upper pivot shaft oil seal had a slow, weeping type leak even though the seal was new. So I removed the 90W gear oil, then packed the steering gear box with EP grease. The grease lubes the steering gears just fine and in a year of service still hasn't leaked a bit thru the seal. So next time I do one I'll simply use EP grease instead of gear oil in the steering pot. Hope this helps....

Tractor Traction - by Chris Pratt. Our first bout with traction problems came when cultivatin with our Massey-Harris Pony. Up till then, this tractor had been running a corn grinder and pulling a trailer. It had new unfilled rear tires and no wheel weights. The garden was already sprouting when we hooked up the mid-mount shovel cultivators to the Pony. The seed bed was soft enough that the rear end would spin and slowly work its way to the downhill side of the gardens slight incline. From this, we learned our lesson sinc
