You're close...Make sure you bring #1 cyc. up to TDC on the compression stroke, (Remove the front most spark plug (#1) and stick your finger over the hole to feel air being forced out) then mate the mark on the crank pulley with the pointer on the timing cover. Now install the rotor and see the relative position of the contact end of the rotor to the corresponding post on the dist. cap. that will be #1 then clockwise around the cap the next post would have the wire going to #3 plug, next to #4 and last to #2. You shouldn't have had to remove more than just the cap, rotor, & dust cover on the distributor to change the points unless there has been a serious field modification done to your dist. This should at least allow you to get her started and then you can fine-tune it by rotating the base of the distributor to get it right on the money. Good luck//FB
