Sounds to me like if you have to stop and clutch to do it, you might as well just use the tranny gears. When pushing and piling dirt with my loader I use 1st, then I just flip the shifter straight up to reverse.

We had a mixed farm consisting of grain and dairy all done with old machinery and by hand.
