I stack mine on old pallets to keep it off the ground, then cover the tops of the piles with a poly tarp to keep rain/snow off. But I leave the sides of the stack open so air can freely circulate. My experience has been good wood (oak, maple, ash, etc.) keeps for several years like this, and I've never had problems with insects. It's 91 deg outside and we're discussing firewood....jeez!
