Polarizing question for 350D

The thread below on repolarizing reminds me I have a question in this area. We had been running the Farmall 350D for a while with a dead battery, rolling down a hill to pop start it. I recently put a battery in the 350D and polarized the generator before starting.

At first, the DC meter showed a steady charge when running and the diesel started easily with a quick touch to the starter button. However, about a week later I noticed the DC meter jumping all around wildly, then after parking it, the battery didn't have enough juice to turn the engine over. Does this tell you I need to repolarize or that the regulator has a problem? The regulator was replaced about 10 years ago. The generator was rebuilt about 5 years ago. Its the 12V positive ground setup, if that makes a difference.
