The others pretty much told you the story. The A, B, C, etc tractors only have a bronze bushing for a pilot bearing in the clutch. The best it can do is still have a little friction to keep the tranny parts turning when you are in neutral. There is nothing making any resistance to stop the tranny unless something is hooked to the PTO or you have some bad bearings in there to cause friction. On the H and M, the Lift all hydraulic unit makes some resistance plus they have a better pilot bearing, so it's usually not a problem on those tractors. As the others said, once you have it in gear and you stop the tractor, you can shift from gear to gear without grinding. Or if you have something hooked to the PTO, when that is stopped, you know the gears in the tranny have stopped turning and you can shift without grinding. Best just to wait a few seconds before you try to put it in gear when it has been sitting running in neutral with the clutch engaged.
