Yes, you can put a distributor in any way you like and just turn it until the timing lines up properly.

You should be able to pull it out and turn it and put it back in and be close enough to start the tractor to time it properly. If in doubt, take of the distributor cap and turn the engine until the rotor is at a specified place and be sure to put it back in that place when you put it back in.
