Have you tried adjusting the jets on the carburetor? If it is blowing black smoke then it is flooding - whether or not the engine burns the fuel doesn't make the difference whether it is flooding or not. Black smoke is too much fuel, and you do NOT get too much fuel from a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak would cause a lean condition that would not change by shutting off the fuel. That engine is really finicky on carburetor adjustments, our 544 needs to be adjusted from summer to winter while the other tractors stay the same. Steven
