Loose gear shift level

My 1953 Super M has excessive travel in the shift lever. I have been told I have to remove it and build it up with weld to correct this. Can anyone lead me through this procedure? Also I have six other Farmalls of same age and this is the only this way. What was different about this one? As usual thanks in advance to anyone who would care to comment.
