504 hydraulics

My 504 Utility has the loader hydraulics plumbed from what is apparently a flow divider (?) under the fuel tank. The remote lever has to be lashed in the rearward position for the loader to work (loader has regular 2 lever Griesen-type valve). Problem is that the loader lifts fine from the ground up to about 3 feet, then the hydraulics start "skipping", which intensifies as you go up, and at about 6 feet height, you can't get it to go higher. Same situation, to a lesser degree, on the 3 point. Seems like if the pump is going out, it would act the same all the way up, not just at you get higher. Maybe a relief valve somewhere? Any ideas?
