I just check to make sure the hole isn't clogged. Tends to "varnish up" over time. Let me tell you how I cleaned an old cap on my combine power unit gas tank. I laid the cap upside down on a flat surface, and poured it full of muriatic acid solution. (Was de-rusting the tank at the time) The acid ate thru the rust,etc. in the cap. I knew it was clean when the acid ran out of the cap! I suspect a dilute lye solution would eat the varnish out of a cap. Al
