cleaning off years of sludge

Got the governors off of my H as part of fixing a problem I have with no oil getting to them. Lots of sludge from years of running non detergent oil. My question what solvent works well to clean up grease and junk off of parts like my governors. I don't have a parts washer and I'm hoping to save the decent paint on the outside.
