You *can* do it that way. But you need to constantly monitor the situation. And with a good hydrometer, you might even be able to charge the battery to full capacity - if you keep turning the charger on and off as it approaches full charge. And I presume the battery rep was dealing with a newer battery. If you have an older battery, the extra zap of the charger will shorten the battery life, possibly greatly. In any event, I wouldn't want to do this as a routine thing.
