Dave you can have the tractor either negative or positive ground. I have all my Hs and Ms as 12v positive ground. If I ever install electronic ignition, I'll be swapping to negative ground.

Either you have a bad starter or the switch/cable to the starter is bad. Starter doesn't care whether the system is positive or negative ground. If the cable is old to the starter, it is probably corroded inside the insulation.
