disk brakes on 1948 M

I am working on an M with disk brakes and need to change the pinion seal. Tryed removing the bearing cage and pinion shaft as a unit but it don't seem to want to come. There are threaded holes in the cage to assist pulling but it come about a half inch then stops. Is there something inside holding? Will I have to take the trans. cover off? I ordered the Parts CDRom but it ain't come yet and the phone number don't seem to work so I can check on it.
