In my experience, a clunk in 2nd is an indication that a bearing is out either in the brake or axle shafts, usually the brake. Get the cover off & find the parts in the bottom of the case before the bull gear puts a ball through the bottom of the housing. (Don't even ask how I know that this can happen!) If my memory serves me right, the two we've had experience with were on the right side. We farmed 880 acres w/4 H's when I was a kid, so have worked w/H's a lot. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
