I dont follow your description, I think you are describing the mud shield maybe on the spindle, it shields the hub & seal from the big chunks and mud, then you have the wear sleeve that pushes into the hub for the seal to run against. Also inside the hub between races are tin stamped retainers to keep grease from getting away from bearings.
