From a guy that retired from 44 years as a pipefitter the saw and small chisel approach is probably the one that works the best. The Ridgid pipe extractors work fine if the broken nipple is long enough and not stuck too tight. The same goes for the EZ out. I have taken out broken pipes from 1/4" to 8" by sawing or cutting with a torch and collapsing what is left.
