Alternator Question

I recently rewired my Super A for 12 volts and it works great. Started charging immediately. Now I am trying to get an alternator to wire my 641 Ford for 12 volts and have tried three alternators from a junk yard. None of them would charge when placed on my Super A. All were the same as the Delco alternator on my SA.
Do I need to excite them or something?
