You might have to "go green". :-) My John Deere 420 has a pipe plug in the filter housing to allow you to drain it before you remove the canister. Are you sure yours doesnt. It might be hidden away up there. A little square pipe plug, maybe 3/8" on a side. The spin-on filters are supposed to have an anti-drainback valve to keep the oil from spilling out or draining back when the engine is shut off, even when the filter is mounted "up side down". This allows the oil pressure to come up faster and save wear. But there is no way to completely avoid the mess, as some oil will spill out. Just put a can under it, then crack it and let it drain before you spin off the filter.
