Camshaft on my SMTA gave me fits for a time, just wouldn't run right, finally pulled pump and dist and found that cam gear wiggled around a bit, found that keyway had chipped off, probably because gear got loose. replaced the camshaft with a used one from a 400 (per service manuel) and runs great now. sounds like your problem is similar, if magneto turns than the gear is turning so either the key sheared or the hub is broken out of the gear, hopefully the former. good luck on it. not a fun job pulling the front off but not that bad either.
