I'm sure you will get other opinions, but here's how we've been doing it: 1 - Before starting the first time remove the spark plugs. Now roll the motor with the starter until oil pressure shows and stabilizes on the gage. 2 - Replace the plugs and start the motor. Let it idle 15 - 30 minutes while watching the oil pressure, checking for leaks, etc. OK to briefly run it up to full RPM a few times, but without any load. 3 - With the motor now fully warmed up, remove the rocker box, retorque the head bolts and check/reset the valve clearances. 4 - If possible now run the motor under light, variable load (pulling a wagon is ideal) for several hours at least. Or if pulling a heavy load, pull in a lower gear than normal and vary the RPMs every few minutes. Stay away from continuous full throttle/full load operation if possible. Keep an eye on the oil and temp gages - don't let the motor overheat! 5 - Finally drop the oil and replace the filter. Once that's done, let 'er rip! Good luck!
