I was told and thought the same as you.never wanted to wear the pressure plate out on that 66 chevelle SS but if you dont on that tractor it makes an terrible noise,still dont seem right to me either.waiting to hear what the rest tell you,I tore mine apart to change the seal that goes between the clutch and t/a and after about 50 hours there wasnt any ill effects,and it was all new PP/clutch/thrw out bearing
