Jason there have been several cases of similar problems here lately. I would check the fuel flow from the tank mainly to see if you have a lot of gunk in it. Sometimes it helps to put an in line filter after the settling bulb. Possible you are getting flecks of crud in the idle jet, although you mentioned you have cleaned and overhauled the carb. Next I would check the point setting again. Kinda of sounds like an engine with it's points set to wide. I've had bad condensers that cause erratic idle or not even to run. I'm sure you have the distributor on #1 wire with #1 piston up on compression stroke, so that's all I can suggest. Probably not a lot of help. Good luck.
