Checking engine cylinders

Does anybody check compression on tractor engines before they buy them?

A mechanic friend said I could borrow his thermometer gun, you point it at something and pull a trigger, it records the temperature. He said to point it at each cylinder exhaust port at the manifold. A weak cylinder won't be as hot as others. He says it is as good as compression test? Anybody familar with this?

When checking compression do you just look for any irregularity? Like one lower than all overs?
