First, there is a soft plug on each side of the cross shaft. You have to get at least one of the plugs out first. They are bigger than the shaft and sit in a recess. A small sharp cold chisel can be used to dig them out. Then the shift lever is spring loaded up. The cross shaft is probably worn with grooves in it. Push down on the shift lever while working the shaft with needle nose pliers and you will probably find it will come right out. It will take some jockeying around to find the right amount to push down to get the shaft free.
