If your tractor has a magneto, you don't need a battery for it to run. You can crank start or pull start it with no battery in there and it will run just fine. The only purpose of the battery when you have a magneto is to run the starter and the lights. Don't hook any wires to the Magneto except the one that goes to ground to stop the tractor. That wire just grounds the magneto through the shut off switch so it can't make a spark.
