I think it should handle it fine, like they said - keeping blades sharp will make a WORLD of difference! I really notice that on our JD 7' pull type bushhog that I do the lawn with (and I bushhog multiflora with it too). And about the garden tractor with the four foot deck - I am highly unimpressed with little Briggs, Kohler, Tecumseh, etc, motors - they claim to have a lot of hp, which they do, but it is due to RPM's, and your A has one HECK of a lot more torque than a little one or two cylinder contraption!
And yes, these older tractors do wonders as far as mowing!
