I don't know what the square hole is, but a good way to remove those old frost plugs is drill & tap a hole, install a screw, and pop them out with a claw hammer. Or drill a hole, jam a screwdriver in it and pry it out. To set a frost plug, I usually use some heavy permatex on the shoulder, place in the new frost plug, set it with a piece of round steel a little smaller than the freeze plug and smack it with a hammer. Flatten the dome somewhat.
