When I opened up my H I found the diffential housing broken, too. I was able to buy just the broken half from a salvage yard for $125.
The bolts holding the housing together were really loose, too. Only the fold up metal tabs were keeping the nuts on them at all. I would feel much more comfortable about the repair if I had had the patience to order new nuts, bolts, and tabs. According to the manual (I think I remember this part) don't require the tabs, and the torque specs allow that the bolts are oily. The older bolts I put back in, the torque specs say 'dry.' Wet is an easier state to achieve.
