I was able to do everything I needed on my H without taking the bull gear all the way out. It would slide far enough out of the way to pull the pinion sfaht and it's housing out without removing the pto. I think that once the pinion shaft and housing are out there's room to get the bull gear out, I wouldn't swear to it. If you don't need to take the pinion shaft housing out but do need to take out the gear, the pto shaft would be easier. It's as easy as it looks.
