When my uncle got out of the Navy in '45, he got "vet's preference" & was able to get an H-there were waiting lists for new tractors, but WWII vets returning to the farm had preference for new tractors in SD. It was red to begin with, but it faded to a red-orange & it didn't take long either. I think I read some place that the type of paint that was used at that time faded quickly, as there wasn't a lot of red lead available to put in paint for the color-too much was used on ships during the war & paint suppliers for non-military usage simply couldn't get it. I remember the "orange" tractor well, as my uncle farmed w/Dad & Grandpa many years w/that orange H. There was a dealer promotion to re-paint them in about 1950, but my uncle didn't have the money to spend to have it done. You can still see some of it on his H, although he rattle can painted most of it a few years ago, when both he & tractor retired and moved to town. I'd try to match that color if it was me restoring one that was manufactured during that era, but then I have lots of memories of an H that was that "orange" color. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
