The terms are used interchangeably, but are not quite the same. Independent PTO is found on the Super MTA and newer tractors. It does not matter if the clutch is engaged or not, and you can change gears while the PTO is running. Live PTO is like the M&W kit for H's and M's with the hand clutch on the left side brake cover. You can stop the tractor and keep the PTO running, but can not change gears. I believe the Allis Chalmers Power Director worked the same, the hand clutch would stop the tractor, but keep the PTO running, you could not change gears without depressing the foot clutch, which also stopped the PTO.
