Oil Seals

I replaced the axle seals on my C, fixing to replace the brake seals. Does the lip of the seal (rubber part with spring inside) always face the inside (toward the inside of the trans or rear end,opposite the direction of oil flow)or does it matter? If it does I think I have one of the outer axle seals in backwards. Are all seals in any part of the tractor supposed to be installed with the lip toward the flow of oil? Thanks in advance.
