Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) is rather harsh, but would probably work. Lime Away works well. Naval Jelly works well. Gasoline residue is on the base side of the acid/base spectrum, so any acid would work pretty good. Naval Jelly and Lime Away are phosphoric acid. This has the added benefit of converting iron oxides to iron phosphates, which are soluable in water. So, you'd be getting rid of rust as well as getting rid of old gas sludge. It would simply wash away. Your hardware store might have a more potent solution of phosphoric acid. No matter which acid you use, be sure to have plenty of baking soda on hand to neutralize spills. Be sure to use eye protection and rubber gloves. Acid burns are not trivial.
